General Psychotherapy
Are you feeling:
- Too much stress or tension in your relationships at home, at work, or in social situations with no one to turn to for guidance?
- So anxious or worried that it is affecting your sense of well-being, making you feel all tied up in knots and affecting your close relationships?
- More depressed or irritable than usual, with more negative thoughts, overwhelmed by a loss or a challenging life transition?
- Stuck in unhealthy habits that are harmful to you and those around you?
- Distressed by side effects from recent or past trauma resulting from personal injury, vehicular accidents, hospitalizations, natural disasters, war, abuse, assaults, neglect or other overwhelming life events?
I can help you to identify what’s not working, guide you in strengthening your internal resources and assist you in developing strategies to restore your balance once again. Together we can make a plan for the positive changes you want in your life. With Art Therapy, EMDR, Mindfulness Training, Guided Imagery and other creative processes I can assist you in becoming the person you want to be in your relationships with your loved ones, family, friends, and with yourself. Unresolved recent or past emotional injuries can be every bit as damaging as physical injuries when left untreated.
The good news: Recent brain research has demonstrated that psychotherapy does work! With the assistance of a skilled psychotherapist you can make the changes you want in your relationships. Your neurons can grow; you can repair the emotional injuries from recent or past trauma in the safety of a clinical relationship with an empathic psychotherapist. You can change ineffective, unhealthy patterns of behavior that are driven by distorted beliefs caused by unhealed emotional injuries. With creative, nonverbal methods that give the right hemisphere of the brain a means of expression, you can learn how to transform your emotional blocks, distorted beliefs, and low self esteem with new skills that lead to more joyful, fulfilling relationships in all aspects of life.
What kind of clients do you see?
I work with individuals, couples, families, and adolescents. I also facilitate groups using creative processes including art therapy, guided visualization, and mindfulness training, and I offer consultation services.
With Individuals:
Whether you are struggling with loneliness, weary of making unskillful choices in intimate relationships, frustrated in current relationships with your loved ones, struggling with work-related issues, looking for more meaning in your life, or going through challenging life transitions; together we can understand what is not working and practice new strategies so that you can move forward in your life with support and more ease.
If you feel at the mercy of uncomfortable or overwhelming emotions, or you feel restricted by recent or past trauma, I can help you untie the emotional knots, decrease the side effects of unresolved trauma, and increase your emotional flexibility so that you can use the information from your feelings, body sensations and thoughts to make more skillful life choices.
With Couples:
When you’ve tried everything you know and, still, you and your partner can’t seem to get along, I can assist you in learning how to listen and respond to each other so that you can meet challenging issues side by side, resolve conflicts, clear away old, unhealthy communication patterns and experience deeper, more satisfying mutual intimacy.
With Families:
When life changes or unexpected events disrupt the balance and flow in your family leaving you at a loss as to how to fix it, now is the time to get expert help so that your family can find cohesion and stability once again. Consultation can open up new paths to a healthier and happier home environment where everyone can grow. I can help your family clarify goals and practice the communication skills that can bring harmony to your family again.
With Adolescents:
As a parent you may notice that your child is struggling with problems at home, in school, with friends or with personal challenges. Some teens need all the help they can get to make it through to a healthy adulthood. They may find the transition from childhood to adulthood so overwhelming or unmanageable with their existing knowledge that they act out their intense emotions in unhealthy ways. They may take their frustrations out on family members, or lose their way with drugs, alcohol, sexuality; or they can become too withdrawn and disconnected from family members. They are letting you know they need guidance to learn more life skills so that they can continue their preparation for success as an adult.
With Groups:
I facilitate Art Therapy Groups and Art Therapy Workshops for individuals who want to use creative self-expression to make positive changes in their lives. I include Mindfulness Training and Guided Visualization along with other creative processes to help participants deepen and focus in their artmaking experiences. No art background or talent is necessary to participate! I do not interpret your artwork but, rather, together we explore the meaning of the symbols and metaphors that emerge.
Consultations:
I provide supervision for Art Therapy Interns and I offer individual consultation for clinicians and other professionals about any facet of Art Therapy, Trauma treatment, Creative Self Care for Professional Helpers, and General Psychotherapy.
Please feel free to contact me for further information or consultation.
